Current Needs: Articles on places and events in black history. We get quite a few profiles. We like stories that have been overlooked or ignored in the past. We don't mind local stories if they have a universal appeal (i.e. a couple in North Carolina put together their own black history museum from scratch). Submit query with cover letter and bio (a few clips help) or complete ms by mail with SASE.
welcomes new writers
Pay: Pays flat fee of $1000 for 1500 - 3500 words.
Hints: A common mistake is to not have read at least one of our magazines. We get a lot of inappropriate queries from people who clearly have no idea we are a black-history magazine. In the next few months we may be looking for articles about events and people in the Seventies. Also, we are always looking for articles on black women, scientists, entrepreneurs, etc. They all must be of historical note. We don't do anything contemporary (unless that person is alive and someone who has clearly made history, such as Dorothy Height).
