Description of Publication:
100% freelance. Each issue features approx. 7-8 works of prose, 25 poems, and 25 b/w photos. Antietam Review is the award-winning literary and photography magazine published annually by the Washington County Arts Council with additional funding from the MSAC since 1982. AR publishes short fiction, poetry, and b/w photography which have not been previously published. Interviews and book reviews are also included in each issue. Warmly welcomes new writers. Our organization encourages upcoming as well as established artists by providing a quality literary magazine to exhibit their talents. Circ. 1K. Annual. Decision of acceptance for prose/poetry is made no later than March 15th and photography not later than April 15th. Payment to artists are made upon publication, which is approximately June/July. Buys the exclusive right to publish the same, prior to publication of the material in book or other form, in periodicals in the United States and Canada. The rights include the right to review, edit, abridge and condense the material, to change title thereof, to use the author's name, biography and likeness in connection with the publication, advertising and promotion of the material and to make such other promotional use of said material as Antietam Review may determine including promotion on its website and literary readings. No reprints. Responds 1 week to queries; 2-3 months to final submissions. Sample $8.40 (current issue) and $6.30 (back issues). Send check to address above. Subscription $8.40. Current Needs: Open reading period is from September 1st through December 1st of each year. Editors seek high-quality fiction with fewer than 5,000 words. Short stories are preferred; however, a novel excerpt is considered if it works as an independent piece. Non-fiction, essays, interviews, memoirs, and book reviews are also accepted. Contributors may submit up to three poems for the poetry category. Editors seek well-crafted pieces of no more than 30 lines (inspirational verse, doggerel and haiku are discouraged). Fiction and Poetry: Submissions are accepted via 'snail' mail. Contributors are requested to include a cover letter and brief bio along with any relevant credentials. A #10 SASE is required for status of submitted work. Materials are not returned unless requested and sufficient postage is included.

Pay: Pays $50 for selected prose (no more than 5,000 words), $25.00 per selected poem (no more than 30 lines), and $25.00 per selected photography.
Hints: Mistakes include misreading or not fully reading guidelines for submitting. i.e. submitting electronically, word count over and beyond 5,000 for fiction, submitting 10 to 20 poems for poetry, etc. Our staff is working on an anthology issue for our 25th year of publication for 2007 and information will be presented on our website when available. Writers and photographers are encouraged to read current and/or past issues of Antietam Review prior to submitting.
Photos/Art: Photographers may submit up to three black and white photographs for consideration. Photos should be no larger than 11x14 but can be smaller. Special attention is paid to the quality of the print. The photographers name, address, phone number, email and title (if any) should appear on the back of each photograph to aid in proper identification of the work. Submissions must be accompanied by appropriate postage and packaging for return of photography.
