Description of Publication:10% freelance. A trade magazine providing insight into bowling as a sport and a business. We feature in-depth articles on various phenomena affecting our game, such as Bowling & The Olympics; The Secrets of a Good Operation; etc. Welcomes new writers. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys FNASR. No reprints. Responds 4 - 8 weeks. Sample not available. Subscription details at website. Guidelines not available. Everybody has a different approach to writing, and we don't want to stifle creativity. If we agree on a story, we will also suggest a way of covering it. For the most part, writers should just pretend that we're the Sports Illustrated of bowling, and that should work.
Current Needs: Stories with national implications. Pays $0.10 - $0.20/word for featurettes of 800 words and features of 1200 - 2000 words. Submit a letter or email outlining your idea with a phone number or address (email or otherwise) with which to respond.
welcomes new writers
Pay: Pays $0.10 - $0.20/word for featurettes of 800 words and features of 1200 - 2000 words.
Hints: Common mistake is 'failing to understand that our audience is highly specialized.' Advice: Just be yourself; and remember, Hunter Thompson started his editorial career as an editor for a bowling magazine.
Photos/Art: Depends on the story; we have an extensive photo file, but if it's a story of somebody new or someone that we haven't covered before, we usually require 4/C prints as a minimum; no Polaroids. Cover $350 - $500; spots $50 - $75; normal 2 col. by 20 picas, $75 - $125.
