Description of Publication:
50% freelance. We are a Hawaii regional surf/water-sports/beach-culture magazine. Hawaii and its people involved in this scene are our focus, but these people also travel abroad and the sport of surfing is international, so we also travel beyond the Islands at times as well. We are an edgier type of magazine that approaches our subject matter with candor and humor. We are not simply a surfing magazine -- but a lifestyle publication. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 20K. Our second issue is coming out in October, which is technically our Premiere (current one is a Preview). The next issue after that is December, at which time we'll be monthly. Pays after publication. We're quickly gearing up to be monthly, so I will be putting together future issues well ahead of their publication dates. For this reason, some stories may be published right away if they're timely or if I feel we need to go with them right away, but others very well may be edited and laid out but not actually published for a few months. Contributors must understand this, and know that their deadline does not necessarily directly relate to publication date. Buys six months of first rights, meaning cannot sell to/allow anyone else to publish for that time period. Indefinite time period for rights to reprint w/o further payment to writer in other Heavywater media -- website, special issue, etc. Will consider reprints. Responds quickly. Sample for email request, or visit any Hawaii surf shop. Subscription $20 - make check payable to H3O LLC. Guidelines by mail with SASE or by email.

Current Needs: Feature stories. Humorous section-type briefs. Pays $0.12/word. Submit cover letter, resume, and at least two writing samples by mail with SASE or by email. We will not return anything w/o SASE.

welcomes new writers

Pay: Pays $0.12/word. Submit cover letter, resume, and at least two writing samples by mail with SASE or by email.
Hints: Be good with follow-through. Don't expect to just dump a story on my lap and then expect it to get published. If I do like the idea or story, be good with communication and doing whatever it takes to get from that point to potentially seeing it in print -- revisions, more interviews, helping to coordinate art, whatever.
Photos/Art: If you shoot as well, or can arrange to have someone provide art for your story, fantastic. Not a requirement however. Payment: Cover/Double-Page Spread -- $100; Full-Page -- $50; Half-Page -- $25; Quarter/less -- $10.
