75% freelance. Horse Illustrated is a general-circulation magazine, directed to horse owners and riders of English and western disciplines. The magazine espouses responsible horse ownership, from providing tips to owners on better horse care and training, to alerting horse lovers about pertinent issues in the equine community. We direct our articles to the adult audience. Horse Illustrated is always looking for talented new writers to add to our stable of regular freelancers. We are open to queries and mss but prefer not to receive resumes. Circ. 200K+. Monthly. Pays on publication. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys FNASR. Responds 6-8 weeks. Current Needs: We need informative, in-depth, upbeat articles (limited to 2000 words) that will help readers better care for and enjoy their horses. They may be about such topics as training (for both horse and rider), management or horse-related activities. We also accept shorter articles (approximately 500 words) that are news-oriented for our Horsemans World department. We do not publish fiction or personal accounts told in the first person. We do not accept tributes to deceased horses or poetry. Please do not send breed profiles; this monthly feature is always assigned. Payment varies based on quality, not length. Pays $200-$400 for feature articles. Horsemans World mss receive $50-$100 per piece. Max length 2000 words. Submit all materials by mail with SASE. If you would like to query us before preparing an article, you must include a detailed outline of what the proposed article will cover and sample paragraphs, or clips that demonstrate your writing style. We do not accept simultaneous submissions, but may accept reprint material from noncompetitive publications.

Hints: The best way to decide what type of article to submit is to look over a sample copy of the magazine, available at newsstands, tack stores or bookstores nationwide. You may obtain one by sending in a check for $5 to Sample Issues, Horse Illustrated, at the address above. Look over several issues, if possible, or scan our annual index, posted on our web site. This lists the types of articles we have used in the last year. Horse Illustrated receives dozens of unsolicited manuscripts and queries every week. The magazine accepts only a small fraction of what is submitted. Due to the high volume of unsolicited work, we cannot review or respond to any material sent to us by fax, or material that isn't accompanied by a SASE.
