Description of Publication:60% freelance. We cover Linux, open source, and leading-edge IT, primarily from a professional/enterprise point of view. Our editorial content is a mix of industry news, case studies, hardware and software reviews, commentary, and instructional ('How to') material. Warmly welcomes new writers. Most of them are programmers, systems administrators or other technological sophisticates, but this is not an absolute requirement as long as you are capable of writing credibly for an audience of Linux-hip IT managers, sysadmins, and software developers. Approx. 200K regular readers. Multiple daily postings. (Is an online publication group.) Most of our freelancers are regulars who submit monthly invoices. We typically pay upon publication for news stories, but this does not mean slow payment -- see below -- and on acceptance for articles that are not going to be published immediately. News stories are usually published between 10 minutes and 3 days after they are accepted. Features, case studies, and instructional material may be published as late as 6 - 8 weeks after acceptance. Buys 30-day exclusive plus perpetual non-exclusive online publishing, archiving, and syndication rights. Occasionally accepts reprints from personal or club sites but usually not from major websites or print publications. Responds between 5 minutes and 72 hours. Sample articles at website. Subscription free. Guidelines online at http://www.newsforge.com/write.tmpl
Current Needs: See guidelines. We're flexible. Submit query by email, please, in ASCII TEXT only. Submissions in proprietary formats or with attachments in proprietary formats are deleted without reading. (If you don't know which file formats are proprietary and which aren't, you are not qualified to write for us.)
Pay: Pays $100 - $300 for most news and features, up to $400 for in-depth product reviews, case studies or How to material. Articles average 800-2500 words.
Hints: Our audience is made up of people who use computers for a living, often in large-scale enterprise and academic environments. They have all read plenty of 'I just installed Linux for the first time' articles and don't need to read any more of them unless they have a truly unique twist. In general, generality is the curse of the new or aspiring technology journalist. A specific article about migrating a company's graphics department from Windows to Linux is good. A survey of 'Graphics programs for Linux' might be okay from someone who truly knows their material, but a general 'Linux does graphics' article would not be good unless it's for a special section, in which case it would be an editor-generate assignment.
Photos/Art: Not required, but screenshots or other digital graphics are appreciated. We can handle any 'Web-friendly' file format. Maximum width for graphics is 400 pixels. No additional payment. The vast majority of graphics we run are screenshots that take about 1 second to make with free software included in almost every Linux distribution.
