100% freelance. On Spec is Canada's longest running magazine of speculative writing. Science Fiction, Fantasy, Horror, Magic Realism and other related genres. We do NOT publish fan fiction (Buffy stories and such). Most of the writers we work with are new, and if time permits we do work with them to make a manuscript publishable. Circ. not provided. Quarterly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 12-18 months after acceptance. Buys 1st N.A. Serial rights. No reprints. Responds 3-6 months. Sample $7 by mail or phone with VISA. Pay: Pays $100 plus contributor's copies for 1000-2999 words; $150 plus contrib. copies for 3000-4999 words; $180 plus contrib. copies for 5000-6000 words. Pays $20 plus one contrib. copy for poetry and $50 plus one contrib. copy for short stories (under 1000 words).
Hints: Most stories are rejected because they do not try to break out of the box. We get a lot of 'tried and true' formula stories, and are looking for originality, and strong character-driven work.
