Description of Publication:75% freelance. Pittsburgh magazine is a regional lifestyles magazine covering western Pennsylvania, northern West Virginia, eastern Ohio and western Maryland. Occasionally works with new writers, but rarely buys unsolicited manuscripts. Circ: 65K. Monthly. Pays on publication. Publishes contracted stories 2-6 weeks after acceptance. Buys first N.A. rights. Very rarely accepts reprints. Responds 2 months. Sample available in libraries or by mail for $2 shipping/handling. Subscription $17.95; only available in US. Guidelines by mail to writer's guidelines with SASE or by email.
Current Needs: Definite need for more business stories related to regional development. Also hard news on regional issues; true crime stories with regional interest; service stories of timely relevance to the region, especially in shelter and unusual bargain hunting. We will never consider stories that do not relate to the Greater Pittsburgh region." Query should be a one-page cover letter with a one-page proposal, which should have a sample lead and some sort of outline detailing the story and the sources to be consulted. We will read completed manuscripts, but we almost never buy them. Writers new to us should send some published writing samples, and not even think of sending queries via fax or email, but via snail mail. We will not respond to unsolicited fax or Email: queries. Please note that seasonal ideas need to be submitted at least six months in advance. Writers are responsible for providing contact/fact checking phone numbers.
welcomes new writers
Pay: Pays $50-$250 for front of the book items of 75-400 words; $500-$1,000+ for articles of 1,000-4,500 words (celebrity profiles and complex hard news) as negotiated according to the story and the skill of the writer.
Hints: The most common mistake is submitting things that our writers' guidelines say we won't touch with a 10-foot pole: We do not run advocacy pieces, essays, poetry, fiction or reminiscences, and have minimal interest in historical pieces. We would never consider generalized stories without a strong local angle. Another common mistake is sending queries that could be usable, but too late. Our six-month lead-time is not just our whimsy. If it's now November; we are in production for January and have all features and departments scheduled for February and March.
Photos/Art: Art decisions are made by the art department depending upon the specific story, including front-of-book items. Pay varies.
