Description of Publication:
75% freelance. SKATING is the official publication of the U.S. Figure Skating Association. The mission of the magazine is to communicate information about the sport to the U.S. Figure Skating membership and figure skating fans, promoting U.S. Figure Skating programs, personalities and trends that affect the sport. SKATING features profiles of elite-level Olympic-eligible athletes and other U.S. Figure Skating members, competition reports, health/fitness features, and skating issues stories. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 45K. 10 issues/year. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3 months after acceptance. Buys first serial rights. No reprints. Responds 1-3 months. Sample for written request to editor for sample copy and guidelines. Subscription $25; $35 Canada; $45 other. Guidelines by mail with SASE or by email.

Current Needs: I'm always on the lookout for feature articles that profile interesting U.S. Figure Skating members -- including athletes, coaches, judges, adult skaters, etc. What I am looking for is articles about what makes these people unique besides their skating. I also would like to see well-researched and documented fitness articles tailored to figure skaters. Also, the fastest-growing discipline of skating is synchronized skating, and we have a great need for stories on synchronized skaters. Submit query by mail or email first, including resume if you are a first-time writer or new to SKATING.

welcomes new writers

Pay: Pays flat fee of $150 for longer articles (more than 1200 words); $75 for shorter articles (less than 1200 words); SKATING is unable to reimburse expenses.
Hints: Writers need to be aware that in general, SKATING does not cover professional figure skating events or professional skaters. We concentrate on Olympic-eligible skaters only. Stories on elite athletes are usually assigned to regular contributing writers. A new writer can best break in with stories on regular U.S. Figure Skating members who have unique stories; or stories on adult or synchronized skaters.
Photos/Art: Photos can be discussed when story is assigned, but usually they must be included with story. Pay is discussed on assignment.
