Current Needs: We are interested in original articles on Ukrainians abroad, Ukrainian history, culture, travel and current events. Photos should be high-resolution scans and can be emailed as well.

welcomes new writers

Pay: Pays flat fee of $25 (US) (more, rarely, in exceptional circumstances) for articles of 800-1200 words and fiction to 4000 words.
Hints: Our articles are useful, informative, human and concise; full of detail and color, and our standards are high. Send only your most professional work. Coverage of people and places must be enlightening and instructional. We like to see plenty of pithy, relevant quotes reflecting diverse views. We are not interested in articles written in the first person or in essays from the writer's point of view. We adhere to Western journalism values and ethics. Our writers do not permit subjects to review the article prior to publication and do not accept compensation from subjects! This is a major problem confronting journalists in Eastern Europe. Information presented as fact must be attributed to a source, and each article should include a minimum of three sources. The Observer's readers expect to be challenged to think for themselves. The Ukrainian Observer also published one short fiction article per month. We are looking for superior-quality fiction, especially by new or unpublished writers. A good story, tight writing and crisp narrative will be successful with us. Stories must have a Ukraine angle and must capture the imagination. Not interested in serializations or novelettes. While we are open to any topic, we discourage the excessive use of expletives. Sexual and political subject matter should be dealt with sensitively.
Photos/Art: We prefer stories that are accompanied by sharp, well composed photographs. We believe that photos are an integral part of good journalism - the camera and the pen are ideal partners. We accept stories without art, but articles with compelling photos do better - and bring a bigger check. Include captions that identify the subjects and credit the photographer. Photos of identifiable people should indicate whether a signed model release is available. We would be interested in a good, solid photo essay, preferably in black-and-white. Pays $10 per published photo.
