We love discovering fresh new talent and have already published many authors' first works. Circ 1500. Quarterly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3-9 months after acceptance. Buys one-time rights. Yes, we accept reprints. If submitting a previously published story, indicate so in the cover letter and include information about where and when the story was published. There's a shortage of well-written humor and we hope to receive more humor submissions. Beginning writers have had the most success submitting short, personal stories (approx. 500-1500 words) to the Reflections Column.
Photos/Art: We use photos for author interviews and exploring Virginia articles. Photos should be submitted flat, by mail, and only sent if agreed upon after query. Pays $5/published photo.
