Description of Publication:
Almost 100% freelance for features (though staff edits pieces into Woman's World style). We are aimed at women aged 30+, especially middle-American housewives, moms/single moms/stay-at-home moms, entrepreneurial women with cottage industries, and folks that the everyday woman can relate to. Our subjects and stories reflect that audience. We publish throughout the U.S. and parts of Canada. We are not actively hiring freelancers based on their resumes, but will hire freelancers based on acceptance of a story idea. Circ. 1.6M. Weekly. Pays on acceptance of finished manuscript plus notes. Publishes ms two months after acceptance. Buys first rights. No reprints, with exception of Chicken Soup for the Soul and occasional inspirational/how-to book excerpts. No's' are usually immediate. If you haven't heard anything after a week, feel free to send a follow-up e-mail so that we can tell you if we're still considering the piece or not. Once a piece is under consideration, it can take up to a couple of months. Sample available at your local supermarket. We're the ones with a diet and a cake on the cover. Subscription $59.80; $111.80 (USD) in Canada. Subscribe online at http://www.kable.com/WomansWorld. Guidelines by email to DearWW (at) aol.com. Indicate for which department or what type of story you are interested in submitting. Almost 100% freelance for features (though staff edits pieces into Woman's World style). We look for real-life (true and recent, up to three years old) stories. They must have happy endings. If your story is approved, you'll be assigned the piece. We also have a small fiction department; please see the magazine for style. Think Harlequin without the bodice- ripping.

Current Needs: Humorous personal anecdotes about true, kooky things that have happened to women, told in their own words (or an edited version of their own words). They will run approximately 300 words. Subjects must be willing to be photographed. No toilet stories, please. Unlike our usual features, these don't have to be recent--just told in a colorful (G-rated) way, and tied up neatly with a bow at the end. Think of how a joke is written: easy to tell, often hard to write. Here are some possible categories: My worst date ever (that somehow had a funny or happy ending anyway); The silliest thing I ever did (and don't regret!); The most misguided (but darned sweet and funny) thing my husband ever did for me; The unluckiest day...with a silver lining (invented example: I had a date with a model; I got into a fender bender on the way over; he didn't wait for me; I stepped in a puddle; I dropped my keys in a sewer grate...and a handsome man came to fish them out for me--now he's my husband); My first day on the job (I'm sure we can all think of some funny ones here); The unexpected way my pet came into my life; A wacky thing that happened when I led the PTA or Girl Scouts (i.e. I tried to take the kids on a field trip, read the map wrong, and ended up on a REAL field trip...'); An embarrassing thing my kids did in public (cute and G-rated, please!). Feel free to brainstorm more categories, too. Submit your anecdotes by email to Kathy Fitzpatrick at kfitzpatrick (at) bauerpublishing.com. Nothing will ever be printed without your knowledge and approval.

Pay: Pays $300 for approximately 350 words.
Hints: Please study Woman's World's style first. Our style is friendly, approachable, full of punch, easy to read and every word counts toward furthering the story. We always wrap up with a 'bow'--a line that ties everything together.
Photos/Art: Subject should be willing to be photographed. We have our own freelancers throughout the U.S. and Canada. Pays $200-$250 each.
