PAYING MARKETS

These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

Bugle, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, 2291 West Broadway, Missoula, MT 59808. P(406)523-4538. F(406)543-7710. Email: bugle (at) rmef.org. Website: http://www.elkfoundation.org. Lee Lamb, Conservation Editor; Don Burgess, Hunting/Human Interest Editor; Jan Brocci, Women In the Outdoors Editor; Paul Queneau, Poetry Editor. 80% freelance. "The goal of Bugle is to advance the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation's mission of ensuring the future of elk, other wildlife and their habitat by presenting original, critical thinking about wildlife conservation, elk ecology and hunting. We strive to build bridges between all those who care about the land, and to celebrate hunting which honors the animal, the hunter and the spirit of the hunt." Welcomes new writers. Circ. 138K. Bimonthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 6 months after acceptance. Buys 1st N.A. rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 3 months. Sample $5 by calling (800)225-5355, ext. 402. Subscription free with $30 yearly membership to Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. Guidelines online at http://www.rmef.org/bugle/bugguide.html, or by fax, email or mail with SASE
CURRENT NEEDS: "Always seeking material for these departments: Women in the Outdoors, Thoughts and Theories, and Situation Ethics. Also seeking Elk-related humor, human interest and fiction pieces." Pays $0.20/word. Stories usually range from 1500-4500 words; departments from 1000-3000 words. Submit cover letter, complete ms or query, and bio by mail with SASE, or by email or fax.
PHOTOS/ART: "As a nonprofit organization, we focus on putting our resources to work ‘on the ground’ for the direct benefit of wildlife and gladly accept donated photography. However, we do recognize that quality images have a market value. Our payment for photography is: $250 for a cover, $150 for a spread, $100 for a full page, and $50 for half page or smaller. Payment covers publication and reprint rights (future use of image in the same context which it was originally published). If you have your own price list, please include it with your submission and a self-addressed, stamped envelope. Besides using images in Bugle magazine, we use them for other purposes like brochures, displays and international convention promotions."
HINTS: "The biggest mistake writers make when submitting their work to Bugle is not being familiar with our magazine. As the publication of the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, a conservation organization, Bugle has a fairly narrow focus, that, of course, being elk. The best thing writers can do is peruse the Elk Foundation's website to learn more about the organization, and browse through a couple copies of Bugle to learn more about the types of stories we publish."

Card Technology, 300 S. Wacker Drive, 18th Floor, Chicago, IL 60606. P(312)983-6152. F(312)913-1340. Email: don.davis (at) thomsonmedia.com. Website: http://www.cardtechnology.com. Don Davis, Editor. 20% freelance. "Card Technology covers the worldwide market for smart cards and other advanced card technologies. This includes the use of cards in such markets as banking and financial services, mobile phones, health, government, education, computer network security and transit. Personal identification is a hot topic since the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. As a result, we have stepped up our coverage of biometrics and other personal identification technologies." Only works with published writers. "We are continually looking for good freelancers, especially writers based outside of North America." Circ. 24K. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 2 - 6 weeks after acceptance. Buys all rights. No reprints. Responds 1 week. Sample on request. Subscription $98 in the US and Canada; $148 other. Guidelines not available.
CURRENT NEEDS: Writers for assignments. "Before we give an assignment, we would like to see some clips of stories, preferably related to business issues." Pays $0.50/word for articles of 500 - 5000 words. Articles average 2000 words. Submit bio and cover letter by mail with SASE or by email.
PHOTOS/ART: Electronic photos must be a minimum of 300 dpi. Pay is negotiable.
HINTS: "The only submitted manuscripts we publish (as opposed to assignments we give to freelancers) are opinion pieces from card industry executives. The most common mistakes they make are to 1) make the piece an advertisement for their company (we won't print it); 2) make the article too technical--most of our readers are senior management, not techies."

Our articles will relate to the coaches of cheerleaders and spirit dancers (from middle school to college age) as well as to gym owners, administrators, judges, choreographers, and other professionals in the spirit industry, but not cheerleaders. Publication rights vary depending on piece. Only original articles will be accepted. We welcome new writers with fresh and creative angles." Pays $0.35 – $0.50 per published word depending on length and research involved. Articles vary from 500 to 3,000 words. Submit cover letter, resume, and at least 3 samples of your work by e-mail to cheerpublisher (at) aol.com.
PHOTOS/ART: Not specified.
HINTS: "You will be writing with both the young, up-and-coming as well as long-established spirit industry professional (coaches, advisors, administrators, operators of spirit competitions and product expos, gym owners, etc.) in mind. In other words, what can you offer the ‘know-it-all’ head cheerleading coach for the Dallas Cowgirls and what can you offer a Community College cheerleader thinking of opening her own small gym?"

ColoradoBiz, 7009 S. Potomac St., Suite 200, Englewood, CO 80112. Email: rschwab (at) cobizmag.com. Website: http://www.cobizmag.com. Publishes ms 2 months after acceptance. Buys first N.A. rights. No reprints. Response time varies. Subscription controlled. Guidelines online at http://cobizmag.com/freelancers.cfm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Good Colorado stories about businesses and business issues, especially outside Denver metro area and away from the Front Range of Colorado. We seek features ranging between 650 and 1200 words, and we always look for corresponding sidebar and chart material. Pay is a flat fee based on the story's complexity, length and time frame. Pay can range from $50 for a department item to $400 for a feature, including any sidebars. Our departments use stories in the 50- to 250-word range and cover people, companies, trends, unusual products, facts and more. PHOTOS/ART: Discussed on assignment.

Consumer Health Journal, 255 N. Bernard, Powell, WY 82435. Email: astewart (at) consumerhealthjournal.com. Website: http://www.consumerhealthjournal.com. Alison Stewart, Editor. Will be 50%-75% freelance in the future. A monthly health journal trying to lead, by example, a systemic change in the way health issues are reported. Currently, health journalism is dysfunctional; sources with technical information are hard to read, and sources that are easier to read omit the technical details. We are a hybrid; we read the studies and distill them into more understandable English. Then we add biology, mid-article links and end-of-article reporter's notes to create articles that allow consumers to understand the big and small pictures of their health." Welcomes new writers. Circ. not available (new publication). Monthly. Currently pays on publication; will be on acceptance in the near future. Publishes ms approximately 2 months after acceptance. Buys first rights and the right to sell the article for 3 months. No reprints. Responds 1 day to 2 weeks. Sample articles online. Subscription free. Guidelines online at http://www.consumerhealthjournal.com/write-for-us.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Queries." Currently pays "$20 per article. "If we successfully launch a wire service, I hope to pay more in the future." Articles average 500-1500 words. Submit query only by email.
PHOTOS/ART: N/A
HINTS: "Please don't send a completed article. I'm very picky and I have a specific sort of information I'm looking for. It's much easier to shape a query than to rewrite an article that's already written."

Snowshoe Magazine, 7037 South Webster Street, Littleton, CO 80128. P(303)332-4993 . Email: freelance (at) snowshoemag.com. Website: http://www.snowshoemag.com. Ryan Alford, Publisher and Editor-in-Chief. 80% freelance. "Snowshoe Magazine is an online publication (with plans to go to print) that provides original content and information to a worldwide community of snowshoers. Known as the fastest growing winter sport in the United States, snowshoeing is quickly on its way to becoming an Olympic sport. The Snowshoemag.com audience is made up of first-time snowshoers, backcountry hikers, outdoor enthusiasts, competitive runners and members of the industry." Welcomes new writers. Circ. online. Monthly. Pays 30 days after publication. Publishes ms approximately 2 months after acceptance. Buys negotiable rights. Occasionally accepts reprints "depending on previous publication." Responds 2-3 weeks. Sample articles at website. Subscription free. Guidelines by e-mail.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We need writers who are looking to join a grassroots publication that is headed toward a great amount of success - this is your chance to get involved while it's still relatively small. Our content needs are diverse but also very broad - as long as it pertains to snowshoeing in some way. We tend to focus our content on health/fitness, destinations, competitive racing, advocacy (protection of the environment and open space), equipment (other than snowshoes) and any personal experience story is well received. We are looking for writers from the following regions of the United States: Northeast Region, North Central Region, Rocky Mountain Region, Western Region, and Alaska. We are also looking for writers internationally, including: Canada, Europe, Australia, South America and Asia. Snowshoe Magazine currently cannot pay for expenses related to traveling associated with writing articles and/or photography." Pays $25 for 500-1000 words; $30 for 1000-1500 words; $35 for 1500+ words. Articles may not exceed 2000 words. Submit query or complete ms by email. Complete mss must be submitted in the body of the email and as an MSWord attachment.
PHOTOS/ART: "Send in digital format, 72 dpi, .GIF or .JPG format." Pays $5/photo.
HINTS: "We love working with new writers and those who are looking for more experience. However, we expect a sense and overall familiarization of the snowshoeing sport. That doesn't mean you should be snowshoeing at all times, it's more for your edge as a writer. If you haven't snowshoed or have no relative idea of what the industry is about, go rent a pair...take a plunge in the snow...and do some Internet research. We're flexible, but we're also realistic. Keep our audience in mind; if you are writing an article that you feel is best suited for the first-time snowshoer, make your premise apparent. Communicate with our readers in the best way possible - they are a great group that has yearned for a publication like this for a long time. Before formulating an idea, put it in a query and send it our way. Or, just e-mail the publisher if you have questions about certain stories and articles that you feel would fit. We are looking for people who are eager to help us help people get off their couches, get in some snowshoes and get outside. We require patience and professionalism as we continue to grow and expand our territories and business. However, we provide content all year, 12 months, no matter the season, due to a worldwide following of northern and southern hemisphere snowshoers. Remember, we plan to provide a print version of this publication. We are heavily involved in the snowsports industries and have made the right partnerships to be able to bring this to life. Stay with us, work with us, and you will have a seat at the table when content is needed for the magazine in the near future. (Please note: Contributor's guidelines will be available soon. Also, we may ask to see writing samples.)"
