CURRENT NEEDS: "Original story ideas relating to aviation or space (past or present). In aviation, our stories may focus on general aviation, commercial, military, historic, or modern aircraft. Our writing style is narrative and we strive to keep it jargon-free." Payment varies. Shorter stories for departments may be $500, while longer features may be $2,000 for 500-3500 words. E-mail proposals to editors - at - si.edu.
PHOTOS/ART: "Writers may be asked for photo suggestions to accompany their stories, but they are not required to provide photos."
HINTS: "Most common mistake is not looking at the magazine before pitching a story. Shell out the $4.99 for an issue at your local Barnes & Noble or Borders. It'll give you some idea for our style (narrative) and our choice in subject matter. You'll also see the variety of departments and story lengths. Of course, you can always read the magazine for free on the web but you don't get all the pretty pictures that way. When you pitch a story idea, please be specific on what the story is about, and tell us what would make it unique for our audience. If it's already appeared elsewhere, we're not interested."

PHOTOS/ART: "Email or FTP but only upon acceptance and further instructions from Editor." Cover photos pay between $40 and $250.
HINTS: "Many of our contributing authors are currently homeschooling their children, but it's a mistake to assume that personal experience with homeschooling is a prerequisite for writing for The Old SchoolhouseÆ Magazine. Our readers strive for excellence in their home education; if you have expertise that you can share, we'd love to hear it! Each issue of TOS focuses on different themes. The 2008 Summer issue will focus on special needs, and traditionally the Winter publication has a classical theme. We are looking for authors who have a passion about God, about homeschooling, about training children in wisdom, knowledge, and Godly character and want to share their ideas with others who share similar passions. Make sure your content is well researched, thorough, and accurate. Write to teach and encourage, not to impress, the readers. Don't underestimate the value of your contribution. We'd love to hear your ideas for future articles!

CURRENT NEEDS: "It's best for would-be writers to read a copy or two of the magazine to see where they might fit in." Pay ranges from $50 for short items to a maximum of around $600 for the average feature. The maximum for most features is around 2000 words; shorter (Departments) articles range from 1000 (or less) to 1500, and the Under Sail section comprises numerous short bits. "Queries avoid disappointments (subject recently covered, no interest in subject, etc.). We do read unsolicited manuscripts, and prefer them to be emailed to sailmail - at - sailmagazine.com; if the material is mailed, an SASE is requested."
PHOTOS/ART: See specs on the website (link above). "We prefer high-res digitals (first), slides (second), prints (a distant third)."
HINTS: "Writers should familiarize themselves with the magazine and try to come up with stories or story ideas that would fit with the content. This isn't as narrow as it seems--we cast a wide net--but it certainly would exclude, say, powerboat subjects and subjects that are completely unrelated to sailing (and we do get them)."

Started by a work-at-home mom and staffed primarily by work-at-home parents, *theWAHMmagazine* is a bi-monthly digital magazine for moms, dads and parents-to-be in any industry who freelance, telecommute, run their own businesses, or work at home as part of a larger home-based business company. It's also geared for the work-at-home-parents who've come before usóthe veterans *and* retirees." 75% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 100 subscribers and growing. Bi-monthly. CURRENT NEEDS: "While we are seeking articles for all of our departments, we really need articles for the My Time--Relaxation and Rejuvenation and the Health and Fitness departments. We also like to see new angles, new approaches to work-at-home and work-at-home parenting issues." Pay ranges from $35.00 (US) for reprints and $50.00 to $350 for all other articles of 1000-3000 words. "Queries and manuscripts should be sent within the body of an e-mail. We only take electronic submissions. Submissions should still follow standard submission etiquette--cover letters are encouraged. Articles should include the author's coordinates at the top of the submission; title and word count of the body and any sidebars. A short bio should follow the article or final sidebar if sidebars are included. Queries should include clips or point us to where we can view clips."
PHOTOS/ART: "Photos/art must be camera ready. Pay depends upon the number of photos and experience. Usually, if they are part of an article, the photos will be included in considering the final fee paid to a writer. Submitting photos/art with an article does not guarantee their use, however. All photos and art must include a credit line. If the photographer is someone other than the writer, proof of rights/permission for use must be shown."
HINTS: "A common mistake is not looking at the editorial calendar before pitching us. It's not a good idea to pitch a piece to us that is about the exact same thing that appeared in the previous issue. If a writer wants to pitch something similar, re-work it so that it could fit into another issue. We don't want to see the same articles that appear around the Internet about working from home or about writing. While we welcome articles about writing, we're not just about the profession of writing. Also, while we do take reprints, we select carefully so that we do not just become a venue for article mills and evergreens. (The occasional evergreen is okay, but only if there can be a fresh take on the subject.) For new, we will be starting to add interactive/functional media to the pages of the magazine beyond podcasts in the Health and Fitness department. For short video articles, we would also want to see an accompanying transcript of the video and a synopsis. More about this will be posted at on our Web site and blog as we draw closer to being ready to offer this option."
