PAYING MARKETS

Island Angler, 30 Acacia Ave., Nanaimo, BC V9R 3L4, Canada. Website: http://www.islandangler.net. "Island Angler - Vancouver Island Fishing Guide is published 6 times yearly. This tabloid magazine has informed and involved anglers world-wide since 1989, promoting and protecting our unique West Coast fisheries - trophy Pacific Salmon or giant Halibut in the salt water plus Steelhead, Trout and Smallmouth Bass in lakes and rivers. Whether you like fly fishing, spin casting or trolling Vancouver Island is a four season sport fishing paradise." 30% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 12K. Bi-monthly. Pays after publication. Publishes ms 3-8 months after acceptance. Buys first rights and electronic rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 6 weeks. Sample $5. Subscription $25 in Canada; $30 outside of Canada. Guidelines online at: http://www.islandangler.net/guidelines.htm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are always looking for well written articles about Vancouver Island fisheries. We are also looking to acquire guide book manuscripts that would fit with our existing line of books (see our bookstore section on our website at http://www.islandangler.net/books.htm)." Pays $25 for 800-1400 words. Submit query by mail or email. Does not accept attachments. "For books, send a 2-3 page summary/proposal, include possible sources, list of photos, available maps, illustrations, etc. Payment for book manuscripts is negotiable."
PHOTOS/ART: "Photos always welcome. Generally does not pay for photos."
HINTS: "If you've never sampled Vancouver Island's unique fisheries chances are you have little to say to our readers. Writers should attempt to conform to Canadian English; we adhere to it."
Just Labs, 2779 Aero Park Drive, Traverse City, MI 49686. Email: Jake-at-villagepress.com. Website: http://www.justlabsmagazine.com. Jason Smith, Editor. 25%-40% freelance. "Just Labs is geared toward owners of Labrador retrievers covering the aspects of pet and family life with America's most popular dog." Welcomes new writers. Circ 20K. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Period between acceptance and publication varies. "We schedule articles at all times of the year." Buys first N.A. serial rights. No reprints. CURRENT NEEDS: See hints below. Also, more factual articles (not reflective stories of life with a particular Lab) that will help readers get the most out of their dog -- health articles, training articles, fun things people can do with their Labs, etc." Pays flat fee of $300-$400 for features of 1000-1800 words, depending on word length and photo support.
PHOTO/ART: Pays "flat fee of $75 if purchased from someone other than author (stock); payment for feature articles include photos (no additional payment to author for photos submitted by author.)"
HINTS: "Just Labs is now accepting articles for their exclusive, subscriber-only section on the website. Same types of features as run in the magazine. Word limit maximum of 1,500 words. Pays $0.10 per word upon posting. Website content updated every couple of weeks, so will be looking for lots of content. Contact Just Labs web editor Nat Almiral at nat-at-villagepress.com. We receive lots of stories about that special Lab that is now gone -- for the most part, our readers want to learn how to enjoy their Lab right now. Though we do run one or two reflective/humorous stories per issue, these are usually taken up well in advance and are a much tougher sell. So, stay factual."
Kung Fu Tai Chi, 40748 Encyclopedia Circle, Fremont, CA 94538. P(510)656-5100. F(510)656-8844. Email: Gene-at-KungFuMagazine.com. Website: http://www.KungFuMagazine.com. Kung Fu Tai Chi is now the largest English language magazine focusing exclusively on the Chinese martial arts." 70% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 30K. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3-6 months after acceptance. Buys 1st North American Serial right. No reprints. Responds one week to emails. Sample available at newsstands; back issues available at MartialArtsMart.com. PHOTOS/ART: "8 photos minimum; full size 300 dpi."
HINTS: "Contributors should focus on the method, technique or philosophy more than the personality of the person transmitting the method. No one wants to read about someone else's master. They want ideas they can integrate into their own practice."
MexicoXpatz, 3980 Broadway, 103-153, Boulder, CO 80304. Email: publisher-at-mexicoxpatz.com. Website: http://www.mexicoxpatz.com. Pam Stone, Publisher. "The quarterly digital magazine covering Mexico, one city at a time." 90% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Quarterly. Pays upon publication. Publishes ms in 2 months. Responds in a few days. Sample available by request. Subscription $14.99. Guidelines available online at: http://www.mexicoxpatz.com, see "writers" page.

PHOTOS/ART: "12 inches wide, 300 dpi." Pays $75.00 per published photo.
HINTS: Common mistake is when writers' "emails simply include links to work or an attached resume. My best advice is to write a brief email describing your experience with the area you would like to write about and/or your area of expertise. Write it in the tone and with the style you plan on using for your article so that we can assess your style at a glance. It's a great way for you to shine."

Subscription $25; $30 outside of the U.S. Guidelines online at http://www.umich.edu/~mqr/submiss.htm and http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=44994 or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: "MQR is open to general articles directed at an intellectual -- but not necessarily academic -- audience. Essays ought to have a personal voice and engage a significant subject. Scholarship must be present as a foundation, but we are not interested in specialized essays directed only at professionals in the field. We also like memoirs and interviews with significant historical or cultural resonance." Pays $8-$12/page. Prose runs 1500-7000 words. Submit query for non-fiction or complete ms for fiction/poetry by mail with SASE. Does not accept email submissions. Prefers queries for interviews and reviews.

New Harbinger Publications, 5674 Shattuck Avenue, Oakland, CA 94609. Email: proposals-at-newharbinger.com. Website: http://www.newharbinger.com. Tesilya Hanauer, Associate Acquisitions Manager. "We publish the finest psychology and health books available. Publishes book approximately 9-18 months after acceptance of final ms. Responds 2-3 months. Guidelines online at http://www.newharbinger.com/client/client_pages/hoverlinks.cfm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are currently looking for cutting-edge manuscripts on the following topics and in the following categories: Depression, anxiety and panic, problem anger, trauma or post-traumatic stress, coping with stress, building self-esteem, communication skills, parenting a child with psychological problems, mindfulness and psychotherapy, complementary and alternative health, consciousness and psychology." Royalties based on net and advances are an estimated amount for first year sales. Average book is 200 pages. Submit "cover letter, proposal, bio, annotated table of contents and 2-3 sample chapters. See our Submission Guidelines. We prefer Web based submissions through our proposals email listed below. You can send proposals to proposals-at-newharbinger.com.
HINTS: "Please do your research ahead of time. Find out what types of books the publisher publishes. Many authors make the mistake of not researching the publisher's niche. How does your book fit their niche? Also, have a clear understanding of how your books compares to others already on the market. One of our pet peeves (and a red flag) is when an author says, 'There's nothing out there like this book.' Knowing your competition gives the publisher a category in which to place your book. If other books are doing well on the topic (say, autism), that actually increases the chances of a publisher picking up your book."
