PAYING MARKETS
These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

Welcomes new writers. Circ. over 1 million. Animal Wellness is bi-monthly; Feline Wellness is quarterly. Pays upon publication. Publishes ms on average 2 months after acceptance. Buys first rights only. No reprints. Responds in about a month. For sample, call or visit the website. Subscription $19 US; $24 Canadian; digital subscription is $12. CURRENT NEEDS: "Good writers who have an interest in and some knowledge about dogs and cats and natural/holistic health. We recently launched Feline Wellness so are looking for good cat writers. Pays $50-$160 for 500-1500 words, depending on length and content." Submit via email, with detailed query, writing samples, and bio.
PHOTOS/ART: "Varies, depending on the article."
HINTS: "The most common mistake is writers not familiarizing themselves with our publications before submitting something. I highly recommend people read several back issues to get an idea of the type, tone and length of articles we publish before submitting a query or article. Having to deal with queries from people who obviously have never read our magazines is time-consuming and even insulting."
Arc Poetry Magazine, P.O. Box 81060, Ottawa, ON K8A 1R1, Canada. Email: managingeditor-at-arcpoetry.ca. Website: http://www.arcpoetry.ca. "For 30 years, Arc Poetry Magazine has been bringing great poetry to readers in Canada and beyond. At Arc we find the brave new voices. We dig up the dead and too-soon-forgotten. We tackle the burning questions: What, say, is hockey poetry really about? What's with this ghazal fad? And: would you dare to be the next Anon? Arc features poetry that's woozy, yap-happy, cunning and smoking, and prose that offers a new perspective on the verse you thought you knew." 90% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Bi-annual. Pays on publication. Publishes ms within 6 months of acceptance. Buys First Canadian rights. No reprints. Responds 3-6 months. Sample available online. Subscription $26(CAN) US, $20(CAN) Canada. PHOTOS/ART: "We feature the work of one visual artist in each issue. Payment is $40 per page, for 10 pages. Submission guidelines for art work can be found at http://www.arcpoetry.ca."
The Artist's Magazine, 4700 E. Galbraith Road, Cincinnati, OH 45236. Email: tamedit-at-fwmedia.com. Website: http://www.artistsmagazine.com. Maureen Bloomfield, Editor. You can order a sample copy by calling (800)258-0929. Subscription $19.96; $29.96 outside the U.S. See http://www.artistsnetwork.com/magazines. Guidelines online at http://www.artistsnetwork.com/upload/images/TAM%20submission%20guidelines.pdf or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are always looking for informative articles about techniques from the artist's viewpoint, using the language of art. Features need to emphasize the creative process: how the artist works with a medium, solves problems and conducts business. Our readers are artists, so techniques and methods must be specifically explained and/or demonstrated. Please read a copy of our magazine to familiarize yourself with our columns and departments. Many are written by freelancers." Pays
$300-$1000 for features of 500-1200 words. "Unsolicited manuscripts are not accepted for features or columns. Please send a query letter, at least eight slides (or images on CD), resumes and clips of previously published work, an inventory list of images submitted and an SASE. We do not accept e-mail submissions."
PHOTOS/ART: "Send slides or digital images on CD. Digital images should be at least 1600 x 1200 pixels, or about 4x6 inches at 300 dpi. We suggest art be shot with a color separation guide (such as Kodak Q13 or Q14) to ensure accurate color reproduction." Payment is usually included in the feature fee.
HINTS: "It is essential for writers to be familiar with our magazine. Also, we work about six months in advance, so pitches tied to events happening in a month or two will likely be rejected."

Stories and poems appearing in Black Warrior Review have been reprinted in the Pushcart Prize series, Best American Short Stories, Best American Poetry, New Stories from the South, and other anthologies. Each issue features a chapbook from a nationally known poet." 80% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 2K. Bi-annual. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 1-6 months after acceptance. Buys first rights. No reprints. Response time varies. Subscription $16; $20 outside the U.S. Guidelines online at: http://www.bwr.ua.edu/submit.html.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Black Warrior Review publishes work from both well-established and brand-new writers. The editors love to see non-traditional work that takes risks and, particularly, questions the limits of form and genre, but, naturally, we consider all manuscripts and quality is always our primary consideration." Pays flat fee of around $75. Manuscripts must not exceed 7500 words. Only seven poems permitted per submission. Submit query or complete ms and cover letter by mail with SASE.
PHOTOS/ART: Must be 300 dpi. Artist payment varies.
HINTS: "The best advice I can give is to be familiar with a publication before sending out your ms. Knowing where your work will best fit already gives you a advantage over the writers not willing to do the research."
