PAYING MARKETS

These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication

DRAFT Magazine, 4350 East Camelback Road, Suite A125, Phoenix, AZ 85018. P(888)806-HOPS. Email: jessica.daynor-at-draftmag.com. Website: http://www.draftmag.com. Jessica Daynor, Managing Editor; Erika Rietz, Editor-in-Chief. 60% freelance. "DRAFT is a national lifestyle magazine similar to cigar or wine magazines but with a focus on beer. In addition to formal reviews and beer content, DRAFT offers food, sports, travel and other lifestyle stories." Prefers to work with published writers. Circ. 300K. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Period between acceptance and publication, "depends on the story--sometimes we'll assign something for the issue we're currently working on, and other times we'll accept a pitch with the intent to run it a few issues down the line." Buys "1. Sole and exclusive rights for a period of one year after acceptance of the manuscript; 2. The right to use your name or part or all of your work in DRAFT overruns, advertising and/or promotions; 3.The right to have your work included, along with the entire issue of DRAFT Magazine in which it appears, on an electronic database; and 4. Your manuscript may not appear elsewhere, in whole, in part or in an alternate version, until after DRAFT Magazine's rights expire. In the event DRAFT Magazine rejects the manuscript, all rights revert to you." No reprints. Responds 2-8 weeks. Sample for email request to managing editor. Subscription $19.99. Guidelines online at http://www.draftmag.com/submissions.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Shorter, 150-600-word or blurb-style pieces for our front-of-book sections, On Tap (beer-related), On Tap Life (not beer related), Trek Notes (travel-focused) and Taste Notes (food-related) departments, as well as both beer- and non-beer-related features for the feature well. Features can focus on anything guys are interested in--cars, sports, adventure, etc.--as well as profile-style pieces on subjects of interest. Pays $0.50-$1/word, depending on the department and experience of the writer. "Front-of-book pieces range from 150-600 words, travel pieces usually run about 1000 words, and features run 1500 words-plus."
PHOTOS/ART: "Usually our art department rounds up photos or arranges shoots, but we may also have freelancers ask for photos from a company or PR firm they're working with for a particular story." No additional pay "unless the photo is commissioned."
HINTS: "Writers need not have any beer knowledge, and pitches don't have to be (and shouldn't be) just about beer. We want male-interest stories; if a guy would want to read it, pitch it. Our demographic isn't much different from Maxim, Esquire or Men's Journal. Also, we never accept beer reviews; all of our reviews are written by our expert review panel and subscribe to the BJCP guidelines."
