All pieces must have takeaway value and educate the reader. Not interested in first person essays unless the lesson is strong and applicable to the general reading audience." PHOTOS/ART: N/A
HINTS: "Mistakes and suggestions: -Emailing me to remind me to look at a submission. Since I usually reply quickly, some writers will email me after only one or two weeks. I've been known to accept others more patient ahead of the impatient ones. Repetitive emails irritate editors already stretched for time. Sometimes I'll sleep on a piece for a while, trying to decide whether to accept. Pushing can land a rejection; -Give your piece a title and a bio. Don't make the editor ask for it; -Don't ask the editor what are the guidelines when the web site has a clear link to detailed guidelines. Check the site first; -Don't pitch a piece on how to write. We are an income/money resource publication, and leave the how-to-write topics to other sites, unless the how-to message affects the bottom line; -Don't query in IM or texting lingo. Use caps at the beginning of sentences and DON'T USE ALL CAPS; -Word count, word count, word count. Yes, it matters; -Don't ask the editor for article ideas; -Yes, it's okay to pitch ideas. It's okay to pitch more than one in the same email, which isn't common for most editors; -Arguing about a rejection is a good way to get the next two or three rejected automatically. An editor doesn't have to time to deal with a temperamental writer. The writer has no way of understanding the complete reason for rejection because so many factors are involved.
SPECIAL NEEDS: -Grant experience - grant success stories. ALWAYS open to those since grants are our specialty; -A trick to landing a market is always appealing; -Would love a piece or two on writing internationally: approaching editors in foreign countries, dealing with currency exchanges, different in rights purchased."
