We seek to encourage Christians in living for God through stories that apply biblical principles to everyday problems. Solutions to life's problems can be found in the Scriptures. LIVE publishes true stories, based on true stories, nonfiction, 'how-to' articles, and fiction (please indicate the category). Poems, first-person anecdotes, and short humor are used as fillers. LIVE presents realistic characters who utilize biblical principles to resolve their problems." 100% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 38K. Quarterly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 12-18 months after acceptance. Buys first and second rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 1-4 weeks. Sample copy available by sending SASE with request for free sample. Subscription $14.40. Guidelines online at: http://www.gospelpublishing.com/store/startcat.cfm?cat=tWRITGUID.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We do not accept Bible fiction or sci-fi. The stories should be encouraging, challenging, and/or humorous. Even problem-centered stories should be upbeat. Stories should not be preachy, critical, or moralizing. They should not present pat, trite, or simplistic answers to problems. We accept first and second/reprint rights. Manuscripts may be edited slightly for clarification. Plot - Stories should consist of action, not just thought-life; interaction, not just insight. Heroes and heroines should rise above failures, take risks for God, prove that scriptural principles meet their needs. Conflict and suspense should increase to a climax! Avoid pious conclusions or tying up all loose ends. Think of the story as a snapshot of someone's life. Characters - haracters should be interesting, believable, and realistic. Avoid stereotypes. Characters should be active, not just pawns to move the plot along. They should confront conflict and change in believable ways. Describe the characters' looks and reveal their personalities through their actions to such an extent that the reader feels he or she has met these people. Readers should care about the character enough to finish the story. Feature racial, ethnic, and regional characters in rural and urban settings. Style - Use precise, active, vivid verbs. Avoid overworked adjectives, phrases, and cliches. Keep a consistent perspective (voice) on both time (past or present) and point of view (first person, second person, etc.). Avoid flashbacks." Pays $0.10/word for first rights, 400-1000 words. Pays $0.07/word for reprint rights. Pays $35-60 for poetry, 12-25 lines. Formatting requirements are specific. Refer to guidelines. Prefers email submissions.
PHOTOS/ART: "Prefer hi-res digital files. We do pay for any author supplied photos we use." Pays $25-50.
HINTS: "Sometimes writers fail to provide adequate personal information (address, phone number, etc.). Please do not include your Social Security number. A tax form will be sent if your story is accepted. It is very helpful to identify the type of story: fiction, true, as told to, nonfiction. On average, we use eight stories and one poem per month. We receive between 100-120 manuscripts a month. So the numbers alone result in rejecting a lot of manuscripts. Well crafted stories that require little editing get more attention. Also, we tend to use more true stories and fewer nonfiction and fiction stories. We like stories that allow the reader to draw their own application rather than having it spelled out for them. Stories do need to lead to spiritual application: renewed trust in God, showing forgiveness, serving others, etc. Often this can best be done by leaving the story open-ended. Complete resolution to the story usually isn't needed."

Modernism Magazine, 199 George Street, Lambertville, NJ 08530. P(609)397-4104. F609)397-4409. Email: andrea-at-modernismmagazine.com. Website: http://www.modernismmagazine.com. Andrea Truppin, Editor in Chief. "Quarterly publication focusing on modernist design, architecture and decorative arts of the 20th century." 75% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 20-30K. Quarterly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3-12 months after acceptance. Buys all national and international print and electronic rights. Accepts reprints. Responds within one week. Sample copy available by request from Susan Shapiro at susan-at-modernismmagazine.com. Subscription $19.95. Guidelines online at http://www.modernismmagazine.com/writers.html.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Articles on decorative arts: glass, ceramics, silver, jewelry, furniture; industrial design; interiors, especially renovations of modernist 20th-century homes. We are always also interested in stories on architecture." Pays $300 for 800-1200 words and $600 for 1200-2500 words. "Email query, a few paragraphs explaining story and giving sense of your style; attach or link to previously published relevant writing."
PHOTOS/ART: "Digital high resolution images preferred. Pay is negotiable; small budget."
HINTS: "Writers need to make very sure that the photography they plan to use to illustrate their article is available and what all the costs are (i.e. Photo rights, permissions from estates, archive fees, reproduction fees, etc.) Inability to use planned photos can cause an article to be rejected. Please spell correctly! When I see poor spelling and grammar in a query, I must assume that the article will be poorly written as well and I do not delve further into the writer's request. Also, don't assume that I will be more interested in a story because it has been widely published elsewhere; my response to that is that we prefer untold stories, not stories that everyone else is publishing."
