PAYING MARKETS
These markets are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.
Progressive Populist, P.O. Box 819, Manchaca, TX 78652. P(512)828-7245. F(512)857-1154. Email: populist -at- usa.net. Website: http://www.populist.com. Jim Cullen, Editor. "Twice-monthly magazine in tabloid newspaper format that reports on issues of interest to workers, small businesses and family farmers and ranchers." 10% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 15K. Twice monthly. Pays at the end of the quarter in which the article was published. Publishes ms 2 weeks after acceptance. Buys one-time rights. Accepts reprints. Responds "right away." For a sample call 1-800-205-7067 or email populist -at- usa.net. Subscription $37.95 in US, $60 (US) to Canada, $80 US to Mexico, $110 US to other countries. Guidelines by email or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are not much interested in 'sound-off' articles about state or national politics, although we accept letters to the editor. We prefer to see more 'journalistic' pieces, in which the writer does enough footwork to advance a story beyond the easy realm of opinion. The ideal length for these is 700 to 800 words for columns and 1,200 words for news features. We also use book reviews. We review books of interest to our audience, generally having to do with politics or economics." Pays $15-$50. "The best length is 500 to 700 words." Submit query by email or by mail with SASE.
PHOTOS/ART: Optional. No additional pay.
Rack, 10350 Hwy. 80 E, Montgomery, AL 36117. P(800)240-3337. F(334)215-3535. Email: mhandley -at- buckmasters.com. Website: http://www.buckmasters.com. Mike Handley, Editor. "We publish ONLY stories about the harvests of world-class animals, 75 percent of which are enormous white-tailed deer. All whitetails MUST be measured on the BTR system and score 160 or more inches as 'typicals' or 'perfects,' or at least 175 if 'irregular' or 'semi-irregular.' A BTR score is like a true gross score WITHOUT the inside spread. (If you need assistance locating a certified measurer, log onto http://www.rackmag.com and click on the 'Find a BTR Scorer' button.) Other stories may revolve around the harvest of most any North American big game trophy, so long as the animal qualifies for one of the major record books (B&C, P&Y, Longhunter or SCI). DO NOT send queries or manuscripts for any other type of story. We do not buy columns, how-to, where-to or gear-related articles." Welcomes new writers. Circ. 73K. Bi-monthly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 4-8 months after acceptance. Buys 1st North American rights. Accepts reprints. Responds in 30 days. Subscription $20.95. Guidelines by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Any story (animal) that meets our requirements." Pays $100-$325 for 1000 words. Submit by e-mailing mhandley -at- buckmasters.com.
PHOTOS/ART: "Two publishable images." No extra payment.
HINTS: "Please do not refer to any other scoring organization when writing about whitetails. When describing other big game (book-class animals), references to B&C or P&Y are acceptable. We also prefer AP style."
Rock & Gem, 290 Maple Ct., Ste. 232, Ventura, CA 93003. P(805)644-3824, ext. 29. Email: editor -at- rockngem.com. Website: http://www.rockngem.com/submissions.asp.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Field trips, step-by-step project articles." Pays $275 for 2000-3000 words. Queries okay via e-mail or mail; usually responds within a week. Submit complete manuscript and materials via mail only. Contributor Agreement required. Contact Managing Editor Lynn Varon for details after reviewing the writer's guidelines.
PHOTOS/ART: Pay included in fee above.
HINTS: A common mistake is when writers "don't read and follow the writers' guidelines carefully; they don't contact me if they don't understand something about the guidelines; they don't submit proper captions. For story ideas, see the Article Idea Exchange on our Web site. Rules for the current Lapidary Article of the Year Contest are online and in the magazine."
Taxi News, 38 Fairmount Cres., Toronto, ON, Canada, M4L 2H4. P(416)466-2328. F(416)466-4220. Email: taxinews -at- the-wire.com. Website: http://www.taxinews.com. John Duffy, Publisher. 35% freelance. "We are a very small newspaper with a very limited budget dealing with the taxicab industry in Toronto, Canada." Occasionally works with new writers. Circ 10K. Monthly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 1-2 months after acceptance. Buys first worldwide serial rights. Occasionally accepts reprints. Responds 1 month. Sample by mail or email. Subscription $25 (CDN). Guidelines not available.
CURRENT NEEDS: Queries. "We have a full stable of contributors now, but if someone has a good idea and can back it up with good journalism, we're delighted. Don't expect zillions of bucks - we simply do not have the resources to compete even with daily newspapers - think small community newspaper." Pays flat fee up to $150 (CDN) for articles of 50-800 words. Submit query by email.
PHOTOS/ART: "Nice to have but not absolutely necessary." Pays $25 (CDN).
HINTS: "Pet Peeves: (Writers who) pretend they know something about the taxi business or think they're such good writers they can't be edited."
Times of the Islands, Bonita Living, Gulf & Main and RSW Living, P.O. Box 1227, Sanibel, FL 33957. P(239)472-0205. F(239)395-2125. Email: editor -at- toti.com. Website: http://www.toti.com. Maria Dispenza, Editorial Assistant. "Lifestyle magazine, with stories on travel, art, recreation, sports, cuisine, area persons of interest, shopping, area events. We publish six themed issues per year." 100% Freelance. Welcomes new writers. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Period between acceptance and publication varies. Buys first online rights for one year. Occasionally accepts reprints. Responds within 2 weeks. Sample copy available online. Subscription $24. Guidelines online at http://www.toti.com/AboutUs.aspx.
CURRENT NEEDS: "New pitches/ideas." Pays $175-$250 for 800-2000 words. Submit query with bio by email.
PHOTOS/ART: "All contracted stories require accompanying relevant photos. For photos taken by the contributor and published, we pay $15 per photo. If photos are obtained from a source, photo credit will be given. Sources requiring payment for usage of their photos will be decided on an individual basis."
HINTS: A common mistake is when "writers submit ëessays' instead of magazine stories that have multiple sources and quotes, etc. Also writers submit stories on topics that are not appropriate for our publications."
