Private vs. Bookstore Book Signings

I have many friends asking me for a signed copy of the book when it is published. As I have thought about this, I need to ask for advice.

If your friends/family/fans need signed copies, and if your book is self-published, you will probably either need to order copies, sign them, and sell them to those wanting one, or you'll need to arrange a book signing at a local store.

Authors who throw their own "book signing party" usually sell more copies than regular bookstore signings but some authors are uncomfortable asking others to come to a party just so they can buy the author's signed book. It might be a better idea to pre-sell copies of your book and then ask your friends/family/fans to come to a book signing party to pick up their copy.

Based on a survey we did a few years ago, most authors sell zero to just a a handful (less than 10) books at book signings, which makes the time and expense of scheduling those a money-losing proposition for most authors.
