CURRENT NEEDS: "We regularly commission cover stories (approx. 4,000 words), front-of-book news stories (800-1,500 words), book reviews, essays, short profiles and Q&A pieces that deal with the West. Freelance rates for shorter pieces begin at 25 cents a word, but are adjusted depending on the quality of work, the editing required and the writer's working relationship with the paper. The standard rate for full-length features is 50 cents a word. Regular contributors usually receive higher rates than occasional writers. Payment is made upon publication. We divide submissions into several general categories: 'Book Reviews,' of about 350 words; 'Roundup' news stories of about 800 words; features, generally up to 4,000 words, of which we print one per issue; and essays, of no standard length but generally under 1,000 words. All submissions should include the name of the photographer as it is to appear in the credit line and description of the place or name of the subject for the caption.
