Paying Markets And Jobs For December 17th
PAYING MARKETS
These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.
Country Folk Magazine, HC 77, Box 580, Pittsburg MO 65724. Email: editor-at-countryfolkmag.com. Website: http://www.countryfolkmag.com. Susan Salaki, Managing Editor; Larry Henry, Editor. "Country Folk is all about the people, places and events, both current and historically, in the Missouri Ozarks region. Every story is true and real names and places are always used. Often writers send in true stories from their family genealogy books. Sometimes writers interview older folks who lived in the Ozarks in their youth. The most important thing all writers need to know is that just writing a history story is not enough. They must use real names and places or the story is not accepted." 80% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Quarterly. Pays on publication. **Only pays writers, "who send in excellent material complete with old photos, material that we do not have to edit much at all.** (If they try to publish your piece for free, WritersWeekly recommends you withdraw your article. If it's good enough for them to publish, it's good enough to earn you a paycheck from them!) Publishes ms within a few months of acceptance. Buys all rights. No reprints. Responds within a few weeks. Sample $5. Subscription $24. "Our guidelines are simple. We only accept true stories about people, places, or events in the Missouri Ozarks region. You must use real names. Try to keep it under 900 words."
CURRENT NEEDS: "Currently we are looking for true ghost stories in the entire Ozarks region, that includes the Ozarks region in Arkansas, Missouri, and Kansas. Real names and places must be used." Pays flat fee of $25-$100 for good material and photos only. (See note above.) Payment depends on length and quality and if photos are submitted. Maximum length is 900 words. "No minimum length since we can always use very short historical or humorous pieces as fillers. If you are submitting a manuscript with photos, use a manila envelope. If you are submitting a manuscript only, save postage by using a #10 plain envelope. Our preferred way is by email with digital photos attached." Send manuscripts to editor-at-countryfolkmag.com.
PHOTOS/ART: "Photos and artwork are not required with any manuscript but the manuscript must be exceptional on its own without photos. We can always do the artwork in-house. We don't buy photos by themselves. Manuscripts that come with photos receive more pay."
HINTS: "The most common mistake writers make is assuming their material will be accepted even though they do not use real names and places in their material. Far too often we receive 'old time stories' about the history of 'country folks' and no names or only first names are used. We don't even finish reading manuscripts that don't use surnames."

Features articles that deal with business, writing, parenting, and recipes. Voted as one of the top 101 websites for 2005 and 2006 by Writer's Digest Magazine." Welcomes new and veteran writers. Weekly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 3-4 weeks after acceptance. Buys exclusive electronic rights for 1 month only; non-exclusive print rights; indefinite archival rights. Accepts reprints. Responds 6-8 weeks. Sample articles at website; "browse the centers". Subscription is free. Guidelines online at http://thedabblingmum.com/writersguidelines.htm.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We're looking for articles on specific business ideas that can be
worked from home." Pays $20-$40 for articles of 500-1500 words; $10 for reprints of any length. Submit query or complete manuscript per guidelines.

HINTS: "It is a common error to pay insufficient attention to our submissions guidelines: we do not accept submissions via email. In addition, it should be noted that our editorial process is slow and it may take up to 12 months to receive a response from us. In addition, manuscripts and cover letters should be thoroughly checked for errors in spelling, grammar and syntax. It is advisable to read through our website thoroughly before contacting us with queries, as the responses to many of these can be found in its content. It is also advisable to be patient when waiting to hear back from us about the status of submissions as we receive more than 1500 submissions a year and aim to give all this work the attention it
deserves. We aim to contact all writers as soon as possible after the editorial decisions have been made as we appreciate that it can be frustrating to experience long delays! We are currently looking for work for our upcoming themed issue 'Writers in Prison' and we are always accepting general, un-themed submissions."

All text must be placed in the body of the message--absolutely no attachments, please. You may e-mail queries and manuscripts to magazine-at-blindskills.com.
