Paying Markets And Jobs For February 11th

PAYING MARKETS

These are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

Bird Watcher's Digest, P.O. Box 110, Marietta, OH 45750. Website: http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com. Bill Thompson, III, Editor. 65% freelance. Guidelines online at http://www.birdwatchersdigest.com/site/bwd_corporate/sg_writers.aspx.
CURRENT NEEDS: See guidelines for current needs. Pays $100 for short features. Articles run 500-2500 words. "We prefer submissions via mail due to potential inconsistencies with e-mail, SPAM filters, etc. We prefer cover letter, complete ms., SASE. We can get bio, images after acceptance."
PHOTOS/ART: "Slides well protected in sleeves and 20-unit slide sheets. OR on CD, Mac-compatible format." Pays $75 per image.
HINTS: "Common mistakes: Expecting an immediate answer to e-mail queries and submissions; Simultaneous submissions to other bird magazines; Writing about pet/baby birds; Submitting material on topics we've recently covered."

Blue Mountain Arts, Inc., Attn: Editorial Department, P.O. Box 1007, Boulder, CO 80306. Email: editorial-at-sps.com. Website: http://www.sps.com. All submissions should be addressed to "Editorial Department." "Blue Mountain Arts has published greeting cards and gift books for over 35 years. The majority of our products have uplifting messages with a positive theme. Our greeting cards are known for bringing people together with heartfelt messages and sentiments." Welcomes new writers. Pays on acceptance. Period between acceptance and publication varies depending on the product, but is usually within "a few months." Buys "exclusive rights for all greeting cards. If a work is used only in an anthology, the writer keeps the copyright." No reprints. Responds 2-4 months. ""Our greeting cards and books are widely available at gift stores and bookshops around the country. Our books can also be purchased online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble." Guidelines online at http://www.sps.com/greetingcards/, by email, or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: "We are looking for highly original greeting card submissions. We are also accepting book proposals in non-fiction areas such as self-help, family, relationships, positive living, etc." Pays $300 for greeting cards, $50 if a piece is used only in an anthology. Payment for book proposals is negotiable. "Greeting card submissions should be typewritten, one poem per page, and your name should appear on each page. You must enclose a SASE if you would like a response. Email submissions should be sent as the text of the email, not as attachments. If submitting several poems by email, please send them all in one email. See poetry contest guidelines at http://www.sps.com/k/poetry/contest.htm. Book proposals should include an overview of the book, a biography of the author, and at least a few chapters of the book. We do not accept book proposals by email."
PHOTOS/ART: "We do not accept freelance artwork or photography."
HINTS: "Please take note that the majority of the material we publish does not rhyme. Don't be too specific when writing greeting cards, as it will limit the audience. Try to add original details that make a card sound unique, yet are universally shared. It can often help to have someone in mind when writing (a friend, relative, etc.). Become familiar with our products, but then try to submit something that is different from them in some way. We are focusing on finding new voices and new, creative ways of writing and expressing emotion."

Central Florida Doctor, 13500 Sutton Park Drive South, Suite 105, Jacksonville, FL 32224. P(904)992-9945. F(904)992-9907. Email: editor-at-beson4.com. Website: http://www.beson4media.com. Dawn Josephson, Editor. "Central Florida Doctor is a monthly business and lifestyle magazine for physicians in the Central Florida market. Our purpose is to recognize local physicians who have accomplished something noteworthy or who have interesting hobbies or lifestyles, while giving readers news they can use in running their practices or supporting the medical community. The flavor of the magazine is decidedly local, with multiple photos accompanying each article. Writers must be able to write for a physician audience and understand the lifestyles and attitudes prevalent within the medical community. Writing style is friendly, but with liberal use of medical terms and advanced vocabulary." 100% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ. 7K. Monthly. Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 1-3 months. Buys all rights. No reprints. Responds 1-2 weeks. Sample copies available at the website. Guidelines by email.
CURRENT NEEDS: *Medical business – running a medical practice, employee/practice
management, marketing a medical practice, etc.; *Interview/profile (of local physicians) – profiles are more about the person rather than the doctor. We want to know about the unique things doctors do in their spare time. The purpose of a profile is for a reader to finish reading the piece and say, ‘Hmmm. I never knew that about Dr. Smith.'; *Political issues affecting physicians; *Local medical community news; *Travel; *Luxury living."
Pays $0.11/word for 1500-2000 words. Submit query by email or phone.
PHOTOS/ART: "Several print-quality photos are needed for profiles. JPEG, TIFF, GIF. Minimum 300 dpi resolution at print size. We arrange any cover shoots."
HINTS: "This is a local magazine for local doctors. Every article, even a business-oriented one, must contain some local sources. Profile pieces must not be solely about the person's profession. They are to show interesting things about the subject—i.e. maybe the doctor has an unusual collection of rare yo-yos, perhaps she is a fencing champion, or maybe he is an award winning organic gardener. We want the story behind the story.

The Fiddlehead, Atlantic Canada's International Literary Journal, Campus House, 11 Garland Ct, P.O. Box 4400, University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, NB E3B 5A3. Email: fiddlehd-at-unb.ca. Website: http://www.thefiddlehead.ca. Poetry Editors: Tammy Armstrong, James Langer, Jesse Ferguson. Fiction Editors: Gerard Beirne, Mark Anthony Jarman. "The Fiddlehead is Atlantic Canada's international literary journal. The Fiddlehead publishes short fiction, poetry, short reviews of Canadian literature, and the occasional literary essay. Established in 1945, The Fiddlehead comes out four times a year. Its huge summer issue in alternate years is devoted entirely to poetry or fiction. Many - now well-known - writers have found their first home in its pages, and they, as well as some of its editors and assistants, have gone on to win national and international awards and prizes. The Fiddlehead sponsors two annual contests, one in short fiction and the Ralph Gustafson Prize for Best Poem." Welcomes new writers. Quarterly. Pays upon publication. Publishes ms 3-9 months after acceptance. Buys first serials rights only; copyright remains with the author. To order a sample copy, please contact The Fiddlehead at the above address or via email: fiddlehd@unb.ca. A sample copy usually costs between $10-$15 (Canadian) plus postage. Writers outside Canada pay in US dollars if paying by cheque/money order; Canadian dollars if paying by credit card. Payment must be in advance. Subscription $30 (Canadian) for residents of Canada; $36 for subscribers outside of Canada. Subscribers outside of Canada pay in US dollars if paying by cheque/money order; Canadian dollars if paying by credit card. Guidelines online at http://www.thefiddlehead.ca/submissions.html.
CURRENT NEEDS: "The Fiddlehead is always open to good poetry and short fiction in English from all over the world, looking always for freshness and surprise. Work is read on an ongoing basis; acceptance is around 2% (our handwritten rejection notes, however, are famous). Pay is approximately $30 (Canadian) per published page for fiction and poetry, plus a complimentary copy of the journal. Typed, double-spaced, spell-checked, and not over 4,000 words for fiction. Not more than 10 poems per submission (3 to 5 is best). Do not send queries, only complete stories or poetry submissions. Both fiction and poetry submissions should be word-processed, spell-checked and neat. Fiction should be double-spaced. There should be a cover letter that includes author contact information and states whether the manuscript is to be returned or recycled. Please include a SASE, (a self-addressed stamped envelope) with sufficient Canadian postage or International Reply Coupons to cover the return mailing costs. If there is not enough postage or the return envelope is too small, the submission will not be returned. If you do not wish to have your manuscript returned, you can provide an email address instead of SASE for the editorial response."

All pieces must have takeaway value and educate the reader. Not interested in first person essays unless the lesson is strong and applicable to the general reading audience." Pays $10-$35 for 500-650 words, depending upon the newsletter queried, and whether or not it's a reprint. Accepts queries or manuscripts. HINTS: "Mistakes and suggestions: -Emailing me to remind me to look at a submission. Since I usually replay quickly, some writers will email me after only one or two weeks. I've been known to accept others more patient ahead of the impatient ones. Repetitive emails irritate editors already stretched for time. Sometimes I'll sleep on a piece for a while, trying to decide whether to accept. Pushing can land a rejection; -Give your piece a title and a bio. Don't make the editor ask for it; -Don't ask the editor what are the guidelines when the web site has a clear link to detailed guidelines. Check the site first; -Don't pitch a piece on how to write. We are an income/money resource publication, and leave the how-to-write topics to other sites, unless the how-to message affects the bottom line; -Don't query in IM or texting lingo. Use caps at the beginning of sentences and DON'T USE ALL CAPS; -Word count, word count, word count. Yes, it matters; -Don't ask the editor for article ideas; -Yes, it's okay to pitch ideas. It's okay to pitch more than one in the same email, which isn't common for most editors; -Arguing about a rejection is a good way to get the next two or three rejected automatically. An editor doesn't have to time to deal with a temperamental writer. The writer has no way of understanding the complete reason for rejection because so many factors are involved.
SPECIAL NEEDS: -Grant experience - grant success stories. ALWAYS open to those since grants are our specialty; -A trick to landing a market is always appealing; -Would love a piece or two on writing internationally: approaching editors in foreign countries, dealing with currency exchanges, different in rights purchased."
