CURRENT NEEDS: Fiction - We prefer short stories of literary quality between 2,500 and 10,000 words. Contrary to popular trends, we encourage long, well-constructed sentences, artful adverbs, and image-evoking adjectives. Tip - Know the difference between long sentences and sentences that sound long. Look for the rhythm when read aloud. Poetry - We publish all forms of formal and free verse. All poems should be original. A maximum of five poems may be submitted at one time with no more than one manuscript submission per reading period. We are looking for literary quality and do not want greeting card verse. Length per poem should not exceed 60 lines. We publish individual poems and groups of three. Craft Articles - We are looking for a few good writers to work on assignment. We will consider articles under 5,000 words. If the subject is fresh, targeting literary writers, then send a proposal. Tip - Look beyond the typical how-to articles and consider applying concepts from other disciplines to the writing process. Essays - We publish one writer-related, thought-provoking essay per issue. The preferred length is 2,500 to 5,000 words. For an idea of what we like, see Sergio Troncoso's essay in our Jan. 2009 issue." Pays $30 for fiction of 2500-10000 words; $15 for a single poem; $30 for a group of poems "by a single writer appearing in the same issue up to 60 lines"; $10 per thousand words up to 5000 words for craft articles; $30 for 2500 to 5000-word essays. Submit per their guidelines.
PHOTOS/ART: "We will use black and white images (300dpi) for interior pages, and will consider ink drawings and B&W photography. We are only interested in thematic series." Pays $5-10/photo/image.
HINTS: "Our future direction is toward strong style and sentence constructions. Writers aware of sentence syntax, especially the use of free modifiers, will have an advantage. The sentence is the basic unit of logic in a story, but most writers use only three or four variations. The current stylistic trend is short sentences, with minimal use of adverbs and adjectives. This is really the negation of style. Nouns and verbs are only rough estimates, generic words with little signifying detail. We'd like to see strong, concise imagery with a balance of short, medium and long sentences, creating natural reading rhythms, revealing the progressions of thought, each phrase adding meaning to the previous, activating the reader's mental cinema: Style is the thought process."
