Paying Markets And Jobs For May 18th

PAYING MARKETS

These markets are NOT recycled guidelines. WritersWeekly.com only features original market listings, received from and approved by the editors at each publication.

BirdWatching, P.O. Box 1612, Waukesha, WI 53187-1612. Email: mail-at-birdwatchingdaily.com. Website: http://www.BirdWatchingDaily.com. "BirdWatching is a bimonthly magazine for birdwatchers. We solicit articles from biologists, researchers, and nature writers with a special interest in birds, but we accept unsolicited work as well. If you have an article in mind, please bear in mind that we receive many more manuscripts and proposals than we have space to publish. (We print only six issues a year, and each contains four or five features, tops.) Please send us a proposal first, not a manuscript, along with samples of your published writing." 40% freelance. Welcomes new writers, who are birdwatchers. Circ. 30K. Bimonthly. Pays on publication. Publishes ms 2-24 months after acceptance. Buys first rights. No reprints. Responds within three months. Sample copy available for email request to mail-at-birdwatchingdaily.com. Subscription $26.95, $32.95 Canada, $34.95 other. Guidelines online.
CURRENT NEEDS: "See guidelines. Send a proposal first, not a manuscript, along with samples of your published writing. Queried articles are accepted on speculation only. Payment is made upon publication. There is no payment for submissions to 'Your Letters,' 'Since You Asked,' or 'Your View.'" Pays up to $400 for 700-2250 words. Submit query by web via the guidelines link above.

Blue Mountain Arts, Inc., Attn: Editorial Department, P.O. Box 1007, Boulder, CO 80306. Email: editorial-at-sps.com. Website: http://www.sps.com. All submissions should
be addressed to "Editorial Department." "Blue Mountain Arts has published greeting cards and gift books for over 30 years. The majority of our products have uplifting messages with a positive theme. Our greeting cards are known for bringing people together with heartfelt messages and sentiments." Welcomes new writers. Pays on acceptance. Period between acceptance and publication varies depending on the product, but is usually within "a few months." Buys "exclusive rights for all greeting cards. If a work is used only in an anthology, the writer keeps the copyright." No reprints. Responds 2-4 months. "Our greeting cards and books are widely available at Cracker Barrel stores around the country, as well as at many other gift shops and bookstores. Our books can also be purchased online at Amazon or Barnes and Noble." Guidelines online at http://forums.writersweekly.com/viewtopic.php?p=45277
and http://www.sps.com/greetingcards/index.htm by email, or by mail with SASE.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Blue Mountain Arts is interested in reviewing writings for publication on greeting cards. We are looking for highly original and creative submissions on friendship, family, special occasions, positive living, and other topics one person might want to share with another person. Submissions may also be considered for inclusion in book anthologies." Pays $300 for greeting cards, $50 if a piece is used only in an anthology. Payment for book proposals is negotiable. "Greeting card submissions should be typewritten, one poem per page, and your name should appear on each page. You must enclose a SASE if you would like a response. Email submissions should be sent as the text of the email, not as attachments. If submitting several poems by email, please send them all in one email. See poetry contest guidelines at http://www.sps.com/k/poetry/contest.htm. Book proposals should include an overview of the book, a biography of the author, and at least a few chapters of the book. We do not accept book proposals by email."
PHOTOS/ART: "We do not accept freelance artwork or photography." HINTS: "Please take note that the majority of the material we publish does not rhyme. Don't be too specific when writing greeting cards, as it will limit the audience. Try to add original details that make a card sound unique, yet are universally shared. It can often help to
have someone in mind when writing (a friend, relative, etc.). Become familiar with our products, but then try to submit something that is different from them in some way. We are focusing on finding new voices and new, creative ways of writing and expressing emotion."

Current, 6930 Carroll Ave., Suite 350, Takoma Park, MD 20912. P(201)270-7240 ext 32 (editor). F(301)270-7241. Email: Behrens-at-current.org. Website: http://www.current.org. Steve Behrens, Managing Editor. "Biweekly newspaper and website for employees and volunteers in public TV, public radio and emerging forms of 'public media' (generally nonprofit and/or noncommercial and not religious). In January 2011, Current became a publication of the School of Communication, American University, Washington, D.C." 20% freelance. Welcomes new writers. Circ 6K. Biweekly (with a few breaks). Pays on acceptance. Publishes ms 2-8 weeks after acceptance. Buys standard serial rights plus right to publish on their website. Occasionally accepts reprints. Responds within one week. Sample copy available by email. Subscription $70. Guidelines not available.
CURRENT NEEDS: "1. We're interested in knowing experienced writers who know media, especially TV, radio and web, and can take reporting assignments in your region. Please send five writing samples showing your style(s) and understanding of media, technology, nonprofit operation, fundraising and such topics. 2. Otherwise, send short query. I'll either respond by e-mail or call you. Most of our stories are staff-written because readers are specialized professionals with limited interest in stories suited for
general audience. We're most interested in stories that are new to us, that we can't do more quickly and reliably by phone, that will benefit from your closeness to the subject -- your geographic closeness, your eyewitness or your expertise in some aspect of story.
Must include writing samples pertinent to style proposed (investigative, commentary, light feature, review) and preferably similar in subject area. Please include phone and e-mail to reach you directly. Must disclose any possible conflicts of interest. Not all are
disqualifying." Pays $200-$1200 for 600-2000 words.
PHOTOS/ART: Discussed on assignment. Pay depends on quality.
HINTS: "Many of our readers are busy, so please deliver your conclusions, findings and/or 'nut' paragraph close to the top. (Headlines often gives away the ending anyway.) There are many great ways to end the story without making readers wait for the summing up. Chronological narratives can be great, nevertheless, if they have who/how/why stories to tell along the way. Besides success stories, we're very interested in roads not taken (for some reason) or that shouldn't have been taken."

Eldridge Christian Plays and Musicals, P.O. Box 14367, Tallahassee FL 32317. P((850)385-2463. Email: NewWorks-at-95church.com. Website: http://www.95church.com. Susan Shore, New Plays Editor. "Eldridge also publishes a non-denominational religious plays and musicals." Outright buys offered. 12-15 new plays and 1-2 musicals per year. Guidelines online at http://www.histage.com/aids/churchguideline.pdf.
CURRENT NEEDS: "Eldridge Christian Plays sells to churches of all sizes and denominations and many of the titles are holiday-based. Our most popular holiday shows are Christmas and Easter, but Thanksgiving and Mother's Day also rate highly. Many times, our customers like to do quick skits, scenes, or sermon starters throughout the year. These kind of anytime-plays not specifically related to a special holiday are often used as outreach into the community. Characters are at the heart of the plays. It is important to remember that the play's characters should not have an immediate change of heart but, more realistically, grow throughout the play. Although the message in our plays tends to be timeless, we always look for fresh ways to see God's truths. Keep in mind that audiences can and want to relate to characters, either current-day or biblical. Audiences also value humor." Pays royalty, 50 percent; copy sales, 10 percent.
