Alligators when Fossil Hunting?!

On Thursday, we’re taking a homeschooling fieldtrip to the Peace River to dig for fossils. It was Max’s idea. He really wants to find a Megalodon tooth all by himself. Grampa is making two special sifting screens based on a picture of one made by a neighbor, who is retired and spends most of his spare time fossil hunting. He was generous enough to tell us where to go and how to find the best fossils.

Once we got home from his house, I started doing some research, and got a bit nervous because there are alligators in the Peace River – plenty of them. I admit I got so nervous I almost called the entire trip off. But, if we follow the “rules”, we should be just fine. For example, Mason (who is six and pretty small for his age) has to stay in the canoe. He’s small enough that an alligator might think he’d make an easy meal. We have to dig with our backs to the bank and facing the water. One adult will stand guard for gators.

I’m pretty nervous but I know it’ll be awesome and Max will be SO happy if he finds a big tooth! 🙂

This week’s Masonism:

The other day, Mason said, “Mom, do you know what my favorite numbers are?”

I said, “No, what?”

He replied, “My favorite numbers are 1, 64 and 95.

I asked, “Why?”

He explained, “One is on Thomas the Tank Engine, Nintendo 64, and 95 is Lightning McQueen’s number.”
